|11:33 pm - Larry of Araby with a Gluehwein chaser|
Spent most of today with a friend I hadn't seen in many, many months. We got together to see "Lawrence of Arabia" at the Ziegfield at his suggestion, since both of us love film.
It was the first time that I'd seen the movie shown as it was meant to be shown, on the big screen. Better yet, it was the restored director's cut, with scenes I'd never viewed before AND they included both the overture and the intermission music.
It was really great to see the film all in one go, in glorious 65mm Technicolor. It's been a few years since I'd seen it, having bought the tape about a decade or so back. While it's nice to see it at home, the theater experience was great fun, especially listening to the audience reacting to what was happening on screen, particularly in as plush a theater as the Ziegfeld. (The last time I'd been there was when "The Phantom Menace" was originally released -- I'd forgotten how nice that theater is!)
After the movie, he and I went to dinner. I'd mentioned a German restaurant in the neighborhood, so off we went in search of sauerbraten. It turned out to be quite a bit of walking, since the original location had closed, although the restaurant's other location was still open and thankfully not too long a walk away from where the other now-closed location had been.
I had my favorite -- Koenigsberger Kloepse with some spaetzle and rotkohl -- while he had a grilled leberkaese sandwich and beer. Since it was a bit chilly out I also indulged in some Gluehwein and he and I shared a piece of black forest cake while trading film trivia and anecdotes for the remainder of the evening.
