|07:42 am - This LJ is officially G-rated|
After first Strikethrough then Boldthrough, the idiots running LJ are executing yet another Orwellian move.
Once again, the cry of "We must protect the children!" was heard from the corporate offices of Six Apart and the flagging of user content was enstated.
When I tried to read my Friends list this morning, I was shocked to find that several innocuous and friends-locked journals were inaccessible to me unless I clicked several times to view the content, asserting that I was over 18.
I tried to change the filtering on my settings page, only to be thwarted again and again until I finally acquiesced and provided a birthyear, something I had not done in the past because it is no business of anyone exactly how old I am. Since this is a permanent account, LiveJournal already had my credit card info on file, which should have been more than enough to prove I was an adult.
Needless to say, the year I entered was NOT my actual birthyear. According to it, I am a granny rapidly approaching decrepitude, and most likely senile.
Once of the most insidious things about this new policy is that it enables others to flag items as "offensive" and if enough flags are accumulated, then that post (or even the entire journal!) will be forcibly tagged as being Adults Only, which in this culture carries a strong implication of contents dealing with sexual impropriety. This system is ripe for the harassment of those with views that are unpopular, as well as for those of minority religions or who enjoy "alternative activities". All a persistent troll need do is set up a number of sock-puppet accounts, let them reach their one-month birthday, then it's off to town they can go, attacking journal after journal after journal of those with views they dislike, until by force of numbers of complaints the Abuse team flags the posts or journals as being for Adults Only and the writers are functionally gagged. Against their will. Pure non-con.
Catnip to the controlling, that's what this is.
If anyone has been wondering why I haven't been posting, considering how much I used to post in the past, well I've been rather disgusted with LiveJournal management and haven't felt like adding to their content by blogging. (Although I have left the occasional drive-by comment.) I had created an InsaneJournal called Leaves from the Tree when Boldthrough occurred, since I no longer felt comfortable housing my fiction here, despite a larger potential audience for it. I didn't even squee over the 3100+ vistors that have wandered by according to my hit counter, nor did I celebrate my 4-year LJ-versary -- because frankly, there isn't much to celebrate about at present.
I really haven't felt like blogging at all, and now I feel even less inclined to do so. It's very disheartening to think that some random stranger can censor my writing by labeling it "offensive". I really don't write about sexually explicit items here, so I can safely claim to be essentially G-rated, despite the occasional rant about something or another. There might be garden or needlework porn showing up here (ooooooo -- still haven't posted pics of my latest crafty acquisitions for readers to salivate over, have I? Nor my annual garden pics . . . ) and I might pose some photos of myself with friends now and then, but I've had a real damper put on my blogging here. It's just not fun when you feel like you have to self-censor lest some Luddite take offense.
In protest, I leave you with the traditional LJ cat macro:
Current Mood: pissed off
Current Music: "Facades" (from Glassworks) by Philip Glass
I'm about at that place where I want to leave LJ. My paid account just expired and if it weren't for all the people here I'd be over at IJ too. The flagging is awesome for trolls but it'll only make it easier for the kiddies to find what they want, if they know how to get on lj and how to make it so they're older, it's not that much of a bigger hop to find the adult content. *shakes head* We're being constantly disappointed by SA and the eljay team.

You know it's serious when even *I'M* considering calling it good with LJ and moving on. I might just let my paid subscription lapse and move on somewhere else. I'm sure SA is getting an earful already about how this is nothing but a tool for trolling, which it really is. I don't care if they're doing it to shut up the nattering nabobs or to cover their legal butts or whatever.
Whatever benefits it might provide are going to be more than offset by the abuses perpetuated.
All for "da kidz". Gag me with a serving spoon. Yeah, burn the Bill of Rights for "da kidz".
