|10:34 pm - Heat on-screen and off|
Decided to escape the heat and humidity today by going to the movies. Saw "The Fantastic Four:Rise of the Silver Surfer", since that was what was about to start when I got to the theater.
It was a decent enough popcorn-movie. I liked the Surfer -- he was nicely ambiguous morally -- and the others were pretty OK. The Stan Lee cameo was amusing and the Thing and Johnny Storm remained my favorites, just as with the first movie. The fact that the Human Torch was played by an actor I find very hot, and had a scantily-clad scene with only a towel around him, had nothing to do with my liking him. Really.
When I came out, torrential rain and thunderstorms that had started while I was watching this film helped cool me down. The downpour was tropical in its intensity and a number of times before I returned home I had very good views of lightening strikes -- very pretty to look at, but I'd rather not be close enough to one to be able to observe it in the detail I was able to.
I found out after I returned home that two of the five NYC boroughs had a number of neighborhoods that experienced a blackout today. Luckily, my neighborhood wasn't affected. I am appalled, however, that these blackouts are becoming as common as they are, with at least one happening somewhere in the city every summer for the past few years. This does not speak well for the state of the area's infrastructure. I can only hope that I myself will not get caught in another one, as happened a few years back when most of the East Coast was darkened.
