11:47 pm - Beep-beep! Thpppppt . . .
Had a nice afternoon with Simon before heading uptown to have dinner with Ivan at a favorite Asian restaurant, where he had sushi and I had a shrimp and beef dish with red peppers, water chestnuts and broccoli.

After dinner, we went to see "Fracture" with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling. It was a spiffy little murder mystery flick, where Hopkins played a character who was similar to Hannibal Lecter, but without the taste for long pig. A nice little clockwork plot and interesting characterizations helped fill the spaces between Hopkins' gleeful scenery-chewing. Given how disappointed I'd been at "Hannibal Rising", it was nice to see that Hopkins could still find scripts with slyly funny homicidal quasi-maniacs without relying on that franchise. He certainly played Crawford with the deft touch that I loved so much in his portrayal of Lecter and which was sorely missed in the most recent offering from that series. Gosling was a lot of fun too, as his character tried to nail Crawford, only to be thwarted again and again and again -- rather reminiscent of Wile E. Coyote, in fact. Hopkin's Crawford was a villain one loved to loathe and I for one found his portrayal to be absolutely scrumptious.
