10:55 pm - Introducing my new computer, Lucius the Laptop
I bought a new computer today, since I've been having problems with my old computer, Harry the Laptop, while running Second Life, which I use for business. Harry has had an ongoing problem with Second Life causing his video drivers to crash, leading to the dreaded Blue Screen of Death and a hard boot of the computer. Since hard-booting directly led to the death of Chibi, I'm afraid it's just a matter of time before Harry's hard drive fails too, unless I stop using him to access Second Life. (He has no problems with other applications, just that one.)

Since I loathe Vista and never use that part of Harry, except to download updates and new antivirus definition files, I needed to find a new computer that had WinXP as a native installation, since Harry's BSOD problems are directly attributable to the fact that his installation of WinXP was jury-rigged from the start. (Necessarily so, since nothing I had already ran on Vista, one of the biggest boondoggles foisted on the computing public since Microsoft's Bob.)

Unfortunately, Microsoft has decided to pull WinXP from the shelves, in an effort to force greater adoption of Voldemort Vista, so unless I got a new native-installation-WinXP computer very soon, it would be impossible to get one, since the last sale date for WinXP and systems that have it pre-installed is the end of June of this year.

After a good deal of hunting around, I finally located a good replacement for Harry, a Sony Vaio with very nice specs that exceed or equal what Harry has. It's in a bright shiny metallic case, so I've decided to call it Lucius, since it's blond and a bit old-fashioned, but very powerful and the very best quality available from a brand with an excellent reputation.

Here are Lucius' specs -- Sony VAIO® VGN-SZ645P3 13.3" Notebook PC:

I also had the store upgrade his memory to 4GB, but unfortunately only 3GB are being recognized, due to some quirk of Windows, so that's a bit disappointing, but still, 3GB of RAM are better than 2GB, so it's still an improvement.

It'll take me a while to get Lucius ready to take over from Harry, so Harry will still be in use in the interim. After Lucius is set up and running everything I want him to (particularly Second Life!), then I'll keep Harry in semi-retirement, as a backup computer in case of problems with Lucius or to run equipment or applications that are Vista-specific.
