|07:48 pm - Gothic opera invades the movie theaters|
Saw "Sweeny Todd" today. I'd first seen it done by the NYC Opera (which is why I'm using an opera icon for this post) and later on saw it in the classic Len Cariou/Angela Lansbury production on TV.
I'd been eagerly awaiting this movie for a while, wanting to see what Tim Burton would do with such luscious source material, especially when he had Depp and Bonham-Carter to assist him, not to mention the estimable Alan Rickman. I first fell in love with the story when I saw the NYCO version so many years ago and it remains one of my favorites.
I was in no way disappointed -- all performances were superb (although occasionally the singing was a little on the thin side) and the sets and costumes all contributed beautifully to this most gothic of tales. I especially liked how Burton ended the film -- so wonderfully operatic!
~~ gives the film a standing ovation ~~
