|11:33 pm - I can talk a blue streak|
I just finished backing up this LiveJournal. Since I was having problems with the LJ export utility (no doubt due to so many users using it recently), I decided to do it the old-fashioned way.
That meant I went to each and every page of this blog, in order, and downloaded the HTML onto my computer harddrive. For those pages that had collapsed threads from the number of comments, I also opened each of those threads in a browser window and downloaded it as an HTML file and collected those threads into a folder for that particular post.
I did it this way, since it's an easier way of capturing all comments to an entry than me sifting through thousands of LJ emails to reconstruct comments. Additionally, there have been a number of comment emails I never received from LJ as well as missing comment emails from when I left a comment, since at first I hadn't had that option turned on, only having replies sent to me, not my own comments.
This was a rather large job, since I have written over 500 entries here, including both public and friends-only ones. I had thought to take a page out of anarchist_nomad's journal and write a celebratory 500th post, but when I got to that point, I breezed through it, not realizing until about 10 posts or so later that I'd passed that milestone. So the confetti will have to wait until my 1000th post instead, unless I zip past that one too, which is quite possible, given how absent-minded I can be at times.
So, because of LJ's suspension spree, I've been forced to spend hour upon hour upon hour backing up my LJ, page by page. And now I have 550 files on my hard-drive, ready to be uploaded to the site of my choice to recreate this blog.
For when LJ decides to gag me. (Or tries to.)

There must be an easier way of doing this. Please tell me there is, because I want to do it for my LJs, and the digest entries as well.
If there is, I don't know it. This seemed to be the easiest and most efficient way of saving my entire LiveJournal, comments and all.
The LJ export utility only saves the post itself, not the comments. Since I wanted to include those too, attached to the appropriate entry, opening each page and saving the whole thing as one file was the easiest thing for me to do. Since I don't have a lot of posts with collapsed threaded comments, opening those as additional HTML files to be saved was only a minor annoyance. I know I didn't have some of those comments saved in my email too, which was another reason for me to do this this way.
Your situation is rather different, I think. I shudder to think of the number of collapsed-thread HTML pages you would need to save for just a month's worth of your posts, much less your entire LJ. And I don't even want to think about how much of a headache it would be to do as I have done for the exchange.
You have quite a task ahead of you, whether you do it by my method or some other.

Stuff it then. Life's too short.
I shall just have to try not to get deleted.
I wish you luck, given the current climate here on LiveJournal.
People are fussing about nothing. Besides, I've got nothing worth getting excited about IN my livejjournal, apart from profusing swearing, libel if you can work out who cunty partner is, and irritability.
I believe in being thorough. :)
~~ looks forward to making a 1000th post sometime in the future ~~
Wow, what a lot of work! and here I was hoping that there'd be an easier way .... *sigh*
Yes, it was -- good thing I'm a Slytherpuff!
I wish there were an easier way too, to save both post and comments, but as I explained in my reply to Shiv above, I don't really think there is, given the limitations of the current journal export system and the fact that LJ has a history of not sending comment emails.
